Welcome to JBM Massage / Remedial and Relaxation Massage specialist.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised, gentle massage technique designed to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid through the body. Using light, rhythmic and carefully directed movements, MLD may assist with reducing fluid build-up, relieving feelings of swelling and supporting normal lymphatic circulation.
Unlike traditional remedial or deep-tissue massage, MLD works primarily with the skin and superficial lymphatic tissues rather than applying deep pressure to muscles.
MLD uses a series of slow, gentle and rhythmic movements that are performed in specific directions to encourage lymphatic flow.
MLD uses considerably less pressure than a conventional massage. The therapist gently stretches and moves the skin to help encourage the movement of lymph fluid through the lymphatic system.
MLD is generally performed directly on clean, dry skin. This allows the therapist's hands to gently stretch and move the skin without slipping, which is important for the technique.
The movements are performed in a specific sequence and direction, following the body's natural lymphatic pathways. Treatment may begin around areas containing major lymph nodes, such as the neck, armpits and groin, before progressing toward areas where fluid accumulation or swelling may be present.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be incorporated into a treatment plan to help:
Encourage healthy lymphatic circulation
Assist with the management of swelling and fluid accumulation
Reduce feelings of heaviness or tightness
Promote relaxation and general wellbeing
Support recovery following certain surgical procedures
Complement the management of lymphoedema when recommended by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional
MLD is commonly used as part of a broader management program for lymphoedema and may also be considered following certain surgeries, including some cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.
No. MLD is very different from remedial, relaxation or deep-tissue massage.
The technique uses very light pressure, slow rhythmic movements and specific treatment sequences rather than the deeper pressure and muscle-focused techniques commonly used in remedial massage.
Because MLD is a specialised technique, treatment should be adapted to the individual's circumstances and health needs.
At JBM Massage, each session is tailored to the individual. Your treatment will focus on gentle, controlled techniques designed to support the body's natural lymphatic drainage pathways.
If you are considering MLD following surgery or for an ongoing medical condition such as lymphoedema, it is recommended that you discuss treatment with your doctor or relevant healthcare professional beforehand.
